Research Methodology - Literature Review

(Allen, C 2015) Photo taken at the Victoria and Albert Museum

My next task for my Research Methodology will be litarature review. I will be looking at scholarly journals, other periodicals, dissertations and computer databases to enquire what research has already been carried out in this field. 'How does William Morris Influence the designers of today?'

Some of the things I hope to achieve:

  • I hope to establish the importance of the topic I am researching.

  • I need to Jusify my choice of research topic.

  • The research will provide me with the backgound information and ideas that may be relevent to this area of research.

  • What methods of selection I am going to choose?

  • What has already been written in my area of research?

  • I need to identify other designers influenced by Morris.

  • I need to identify other people researching the same topic, their methods, ideas and their outcomes.

  • I need to identify methods which I can use in my own practice.

  • Are there any gaps that I can find for further research?

After looking at further litarature, I have also noted further places where I can view Morris's wallpaper, fabrics, tapestries and stained glass. These are:

Emery Walker House, London. A close friend to Morris, Emery Walker’s house is furnished in Morris & Co. fabric and wallpaper, William de Morgan's ceramics and Philip Webb's furniture.

A visit to Wightwick Manor in Wolverhampton which is richly furnished with original Morris & Co. fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, Pre-Raphaelite art and stained glass.

A visit to Standen in East Grinstead. Arts and Crafts house built by Philip Webb and furnished by Morris & Co. from 1894.

A visit to Cragside in Morpeth which was one of the first domestic interiors that Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. produced stained glass and beautiful panels for.

I have already read severel research methodology thesis from the Bath School of Art and Design library.

These include:

Edwards. S. (2011) Valuing Social surface. Bath. Bath School of Art and Design.

Snow. L. (2011) Wherin Lies the Story. Bath. Bath School of Art and Design.

(This was useful as it allowed me to evaluate how I will write and structure my own essay)
