MA Research - Hand block printing in India

(Allen, C. 2015) Wood blocks hand cut in India.

These images show my new hand made wooden printing blocks purchased from India. I will be producing repeated patterns printied onto wallpaper using wood block printing inks.

The paint is mixed and rolled onto the block using a brayer, then the block placed down onto the fabric or paper and tampered down with your fist. Or you can mix the paint and stamp the block into the paint before transfering the design onto fabric. The placement of the block is usually done by eye or pencils marks. William Morris used pins in the blocks to line up his repeats. The following video shows the woodcarving and printing onto fabric.
