Creative Development (Textures)

Textures

I experimented with foils, flocks, devore and puff paint which added texture and interest to my designs. These samples were more successful and I would like to continue experimenting with these to visualize my designs before outsourcing this work. I enjoyed the process of using these substrates and need to investigate other types of scattering techniques with printing companies.

Devore

Allen, C [2016] Devore paste applied through a silk screen and printed onto silk viscose velvet. A lovely effect but I had an allergic reaction from the paste.

Tufter

Pinking

I experimented using the Pinking machine which I found highly irritating due to the time it takes to thread the machine and the results that it created. I cannot foresee working with this method in the future.

Embroidery

I experimented with hand embroidery and freehand embroidery using the Bernina which were successful but time consuming which I find frustrating. As I am planning to produce larger supplies of fabrics, I require a faster method or ultimately will outsource this work. I used the ZSK (Sprint) embroiderer machine which is much faster which I will continue using throughout the course of my MA as I may like to add embroidered elements to my work for added texture and interest.

Allen, C [2016] Using the Sprint Embroidery Machine at Bath Spa University. Hand drawn flower digitally embroidered onto Cotton Velvet for upholstery.

Tufter

I experimented using the Tufter machine which I enjoyed but again cannot not foresee in my work as my interest lies in the printed pattern.

Allen, C. [ 2016] Using the Tufter machine to familiarise myself with the process.

Foils

Allen, C. [ 2016] A screen printed illustration and foils heat pressed onto cotton to familiarise myself with the process. A really lovely technique and effect achieved.
